A student of Yoga should make an attempt to learn about Maharishi Patanjali.

Maharishi Patanjali was considered to be a 'swayambhu', that is if any individual is born on his/her own free will and was also considere to be an 'avatar' of AdiSesha, the coiled serpent on whom lord Visnu sits.

Maharishi Patanjali lived some time between 500 to 250 B.C he collated information on yoga that was prevalent during his time and presented his treatise which is also called as the "Yog Sutra"

Maharishi Patanjali also wrote the 'Mahabhasya', a work on Sanskrit grammar, he also wrote on Ayurveda ! and of course Yoga.

The Yog Sutras consist of 196 aphorisms which are terse, precise and cover all aspects of life. The Yog Sutras have four chapters viz the samadhi pada, the sadhana pada, the vighuti pada and the kaivalya pada.

In the very first chapter Maharishi Patanjali mentions "CHITTA VRIDDHI NIRODHA' Chitta has components of mind(manas), intelligence(Buddhi) and ego(ahamkara) so the control of the fluctuations of Chitta is Yoga.
